ABBOTT LABORATORIES

  • Manufacturer : Abbott Nutrition
  • Description : Powdered infant formula products manufactured at Abbott’s plant in Sturgis, Michigan

The FDA has cautioned parents to avoid Similac, Alimentum, and Elecare baby formula after reports of four young children who developed infections after ingesting the products. According to their findings, these products contain elevated levels of cronobacter sakazakii and salmonella bacteria, both of which can cause life-threatening infections in children under three months of age. Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer behind these dangerous products, has since issued a voluntary recall, encouraging parents to avoid their products until the issue is resolved. However, despite the voluntary nature of the recall, it’s recommended that any parent who has these products in their home dispose of them promptly and find a safer alternative.

Abbott has determined that the affected products stem from their manufacturing facility in Sturgis, Michigan, and have further narrowed down the products to serial numbers containing K8, SH, or Z2, beginning with 22 through 37, or if the expiration date is April 1st, 2022, or later. They’ve also launched an online resource, similacrecall.com, to check if the products in your home are included in the recall. Although they’ve worked diligently to mitigate the consequences of their dangerous products, Abbott should have enforced stronger safety regulations within their manufacturing process to ensure that no one was harmed in the first place. Their negligence, forced families to witness their child develop a severe infection from consuming a product found on store shelves.

Product liability laws exist to protect consumers from negligent organizations who sell dangerous products in the open market. All manufacturers are responsible for the harm their products cause once they’re sold, and Abbott Laboratories is no exception. If your child developed an infection that required hospitalization after consuming a Similac, Alimentum, or Elecare baby formula product, you might be eligible to file a lawsuit and recover damages. Our attorneys are here to stand by your side during this uncertain time. Abbott might think that they can use their size and influence to sidestep their liability, but with us on the case, it’s only a matter of time until they’re held accountable and you receive your rightful compensation for the hardship you’ve endured.

Which Baby Formula Products Were Subject to Recall?

Abbott Laboratories issued a voluntary recall for its Similac, Alimentum, and Elecare products after four children developed infections that required hospitalization. The FDA has cautioned parents to avoid these products if:

  • the first two digits of the serial number are 22 through 37;
  • the serial code contains K8, SH, or Z2, and;
  • the expiration date is April 1st, 2022, or later.

Although the affected products were manufactured in Michigan, the four cases of infection occurred in Texas, Ohio, and Minnesota, so it’s likely that these products are in other areas of the country as well. All parents should avoid these products and tell others about the danger, especially if you have friends or family with young children. Additionally, anyone whose child has developed adverse health effects from these products should speak to an attorney about their options.

How Dangerous Are Cronobacter Sakazakii and Salmonella Bacteria?

Cronobacter sakazakii, a bacteria found in dry environments, and Salmonella, commonly found in uncooked foods, are both inherently dangerous for children under three months of age. A cronobacter sakazakii infection can cause sepsis or meningitis in young children and stomach problems in people of all ages. In contrast, a salmonella infection mirrors the symptoms of a food-borne illness, including diarrhea, intestinal pressure, and vomiting.

Fortunately for parents, both types of infection symptoms are generally the same. You should be on the lookout for:

  • Fever
  • Unusual patterns of crying
  • Abnormally low energy
  • Difficulty or refusal to eat

If you notice your child exhibiting any of these symptoms, you should promptly seek medical attention, as it could be early warning signs of a potentially life-threatening infection. A trained doctor will be able to diagnose your child’s condition further, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Together, We Can Hold Negligent Organizations Accountable

No manufacturer should get away with exposing their customers to a risk of injury, especially one that specializes in products for young children. Abbott’s negligence has caused real consequences for innocent people and forced families to endure the unthinkable: witnessing their child’s health decline because of the carelessness of an organization that was supposed to have their back. Our attorneys understand the gravity of this situation and want to help the victims. We’re here to stand by your side throughout the legal process, always ensuring that your best interests are placed first, and advocate for the fullest extent of the compensation you’re entitled to.
